There is no single best time to visit northern Pakistan - it depends on what you want to see. Spring brings blossom to Hunza, summer opens the high passes and lakes, autumn turns the valleys gold, and winter brings snow to the lower resorts. This month-by-month guide matches each part of the year to the right destination and the right kind of trip.
The four northern seasons
Northern Pakistan runs on altitude as much as calendar. Low valleys like Kaghan and Swat have a long comfortable season; high plateaus like Deosai and passes like Khunjerab open only in the warm months; and the famous Hunza colours are tied to just a few weeks in spring and autumn. Read the month you're considering against the destination you have in mind.

Summer (Jun-Aug): the only reliable window for Deosai, Khunjerab and the highest lakes - but also the busiest and, in KP, the monsoon-prone stretch. Book hotels and drivers well ahead.
Winter (Dec-Feb): Babusar, Khunjerab and Deosai are closed and Hunza/Skardu are reached by air or a long, cautious KKH drive. Great for snow lovers, not for a first trip.
Summer or autumn?
Go in summer if…
You want the high passes and plateaus - Deosai, Khunjerab, Babusar - and the alpine lakes at their fullest. Accept crowds and book early.
Go in autumn if…
You want the postcard Hunza colours, clear skies and thinner crowds. Late September to October is the connoisseur's choice, though the very highest routes start to close.
